1. Facebook now reaches record number of active users. The interesting fact is that FaceBook just recently started making profits (in 2009). Enormous expenses and growing databases pushed FaceBook inventors to re-invent their advertising market. 2009 was the great year for FaceBook even this being the year of greatest recession since 1930′s. We as users hope that FaceBook will continue working on privacy issues and never share our individual information with companies and government agencies.

2. Out Of the 247 BILLION email messages sent daily, 81% are pure spam.

3. The technology behind the Internet began back in the 1960′s at MIT. The first message ever to be transmitted was LOG.. why? The user had attempted to type LOGIN, but the network crashed after the enormous load of data of the letter G.

4. It took 38 years for radio to reach 50 million users, 13 years for TV, and only 5 years for the Internet to grow.

5. The first webcam was deployed at Cambridge University computer lab – its sole purpose to monitor a particular coffee maker and hence avoid wasted trips to an empty pot.

6. Google started as a research project at Stanford University, created by Ph.D. candidates Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were 24 years old and 23 years old respectively.

7. 1 in every 5 people which are surveyed said that if the Internet would go down for one day, their lives would be horribly disrupted.

8. Although the MP3 standard was invented in 1991, it wouldn’t be until 1998 that the first music file-sharing service Napster, would go live, and change the way the Internet was used forever.

9. According to legend, Amazon became the number one shopping site because in the days before the invention of the search giant Google, Yahoo would list the sites in their directory alphabetically!

10. The first ever banner ad showed on the Internet in 1994. The ad was part of AT&Ts “you will” campaign, and was placed on the HotWired homepage.


11. Twenty hours of video from around the world are uploaded to YouTube every minute. The first ever YouTube video was uploaded on April 23rd 2005,by Jawed Karim (one of the founders of the site) and was 18 seconds long, entitled “Me at the zoo”. It was quite boring, as is 99% of the content on YouTube today.

12. The first popular web browser was called Mosaic and was released in 1993.

13. The English version of Wikipedia has more than 2.3 million articles. Over one third of US adults consult Wikipedia.

14. Nielsen NetRatings indicates that the average Internet user, in one month, will visit 59 domains, view 1,050 pages (allocating 45 seconds for each page) and will spend about 25 hours doing all this net activity! Each surfing session lasts 51 minutes.

15. One THIRD of all Internet searches are specifically for pornography. It is estimated that 80% of all images on the Internet are of naked women.
